Coworking Quads | Part One

I will be delivering a 3 to 4 part series of articles that I’m calling Coworking Quads. This is obviously the first part and will be an introduction to co-working. The second part will focus us why now is a prime time for the Quad Cities to invest in a coworking community system, and the third part will be a plan of action. If needed I’m planning on using the fourth article to address any concerns or ideas that are brought up directly to me, or via the web.

Coworking Quads | Part One

Definition of Coworking:

Well for the most part defining Coworking is to each their own. Some refer to these as shared workspace, work jams, jammies, jellies, etc… The way that I see Coworking is similar to any open source movement in that it’s a shared working area that has security, professional amenities, and like minded folks.

Wikipedia’s Definition: Coworking is an emerging trend for a new pattern for working. Typically work-at-home professionals or independent contractors or people who travel frequently end up working in relative isolation. Coworking is the social gathering of a group of people, who are still working independently, but who share values and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with talented people in the same space.

Coworking must defined by the individual coworkers. What we need to do in the Quad Cities is embrace the fact that our younger generation is bringing game changing ideas to the table. Young people are bucking the old school mentality that we must be stuck in a cubical 8-5, m-f. We work hard when we want and where we want. With the advent and popularization of small technical tools such as Laptops, Netbooks, iPhones, Blackberry’s, WIFI, and GoToMyPC we can work anywhere with the same power of an office. What you don’t get by working from home or a coffee shop is usually a high quality printer/copier, fax machine, long term storage/lockers, whiteboards, meeting rooms, projectors, and most importantly other people.

What does Coworking do?

One of the biggest complaints that I’ve heard from independent workers, or teleworkers is the lack of day-to-day interactions with people who share similarities. An office does make some social interactions easier. E-mail still cannot convey facial expressions, or tone of voice. Some ideas cannot be shared remotely. Your passion for your work cannot be expressed in words, but is usually shown.

So how can you enjoy the freedom of metalworking, independent development, or being a small business owner while still having the normal social interactions? How can you have brain storming sessions at home? How can you get a fresh perspective of an idea? COWORKING!

What if there was a place that had all of the amenities of a high class development office, with the freedom of working from home? Conference rooms that could be rented for a moderate amount, open work areas, computer desks, laptop stations, lockers, large monitor storage, fax machines, laser printers, research materials, high speed Internet, couches, bean bag chairs, wifi, a kitchen, bathrooms, art, murals, and long term offices, tools, tools, tools, network testers, Dremels, screw drivers, soldiering kits, metal benders, circuit board fabrication, small electronic parts sales, classes, working groups, speakers, learning events, social events, and best of all independent coworkers like you.

What if there was a place where new ideas could grow! Where new ideas could EXPLODE! I’m talking about giving Quad Citians the tools that they need to have the next big thing! Last but certainly not least I’m talking about giving Quad City business’ a great tool for attracting younger technically active, and independently motivated employees to the area.

Really? A real place for ideas?

In Iowa we already have a few coworking facilities. Currently Foundry Coworking in Des Moines is the most promising where you’ll be able to find “Shared, collaborative workspace in Des Moines, Iowa” It is coworking in action.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="404" caption="3D layout of Foundry Coworking in Des Moines, Iowa by Workspace, Inc and Turnstone"]3D layout of Foundry Coworking in Des Moines Iowa[/caption]

You’ll see from the example layout above that there is plenty of space. All of the amenities of a professional office space designed by a professional office design partner. You’ll see a meeting room, a conference space, open work area, tables, desks, and a lounge area. They also offer mail service. Doesn’t that look like a place where you could get some work done?

Prioritizing, and the Culture of Done

The idea of the “Culture of Done” was first presented to me after a friend J. Colin Johnson of MobileTek suggested a book called The 4-Hour Work Week. To boil this whole thing down I’ll just simply say “I’m done, and now I’m moving on.” My application of this has been a tremendous asset in both my short time and long term lifestyle dreams.

Why do we spend so much time trying to do? How is that we manage to try so hard, and move no where. I’ve got a fun assignment for you dear reader. Next time someone tells you that they tried to call you ask them this: “Where did you go wrong? Did you fail to pick up the phone? Did you fingers slip off the buttons? Did you miss dial, and not dial back? Did someone comically run by and cut the cord with large pair of scissors? Are you lying to me now?”

Some people may say that I’m arguing semantics but I assure you we live in a culture of do-it-never. The easiest excuse in the book is “I’ve been trying to get a hold of you.” I’m a fairly easy person to contact. I don’t answer my phone that often, but I’m easy to reach. I use Phone Tag to transcribe my voicemail and e-mail them to me. I have an extensive set of Gmail filters to manage all e-mails, and even handle responding to some of them. I use AIM, Google Chat, and IRC. I have two GMail accounts in case I get the first one banned for something. I have a blog that uses the Disqus comment system. I am on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Digg, and LinkedIn. I txt message. I also have a post office box. So if someone couldn’t get a hold of me it’s because they called me when I was working, and they didn’t leave a clear message with a reason for response. No I don’t respond to message that are “Hey.. It’s John Smith.. Give me a call back sometime.” If I wanted to chat I’d go to therapy.

This is my point as made in so many words by the Jedi Master Yoda “Do, or do not. There is no ‘try.’”

Alex Hillman over at DangerouslyAwesome.com linked to this little diddy that just made me get something done.

From Bre Pettis’ Blog:

The Cult of Done Manifesto

  1. There are three states of being. Not knowing, action and completion.
  2. Accept that everything is a draft. It helps to get it done.
  3. There is no editing stage.
  4. Pretending you know what you’re doing is almost the same as knowing what you are doing, so just accept that you know what you’re doing even if you don’t and do it.
  5. Banish procrastination. If you wait more than a week to get an idea done, abandon it.
  6. The point of being done is not to finish but to get other things done.
  7. Once you’re done you can throw it away.
  8. Laugh at perfection. It’s boring and keeps you from being done.
  9. People without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.
  10. Failure counts as done. So do mistakes.
  11. Destruction is a variant of done.
  12. If you have an idea and publish it on the Internet, that counts as a ghost of done.
  13. Done is the engine of more.

Provide Terrible Customer Service?

Do you or does your company provide terrible customer service? Than social media is just going to make it worse. The hardest part about wrapping your head around social networking is that you are now putting your company within range of everyone, and very publicly. Before when you would piss off a customer you could forget about them and not worry about the 2 by 2 rule. Meaning that everyone of your dissatisfied customers is going to turn into two more than those each turn into two more dissatisfied customers.

Now dissatisfied, unhappy, ticked off, or just slightly miffed customers are given a bull horn with an amplifier. Your former customers are now your worst enemy. Your old customers are your competitors number one advertiser with social media. Just being on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Digg causes you to be part of the conversation but still doesn’t help you engage your consumers.

If you’re bad at customer service. You need get into a different business. If you’re a good customer provider than you can easily be a great social media evangelist. This new niche is all about taking the passion and drive that you have for your business and connecting that to the passion your customers have for your product.

When I find a good product I latch onto it. Right now I’m looking at an Arizona Sweet Tea. It’s great, I enjoy the flavor, I like that it’s 99 cents, Comes in a big can, and I don’t go to gas stations that don’t carry it. What does that show about social media? That in 31 words I promoted a product and knocked an entire set of business’ out of my scope.
